Festival history

Mathew Street Music Festival is the annual celebration of one of the city’s cultural cornerstones – music. This fantastic free two day event will be 18 years old in 2010, with over 80 hours of live outdoor music; it celebrates cover, original and new bands which attract local people and guests from all over Europe.
Held over the August bank holiday weekend in Liverpool City Centre, six outdoor stages showcase live music from 11am until 6pm. Over 95 bands perform from as far as USA, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Russia, Sweden and Scotland.
The festival, now in its 18th year, incorporates elements that were introduced in 2008 to further broaden the festival’s appeal, such as theming the six outdoor stages, running for the first time over two days, and huge TV screens around the site to improve the viewing experience.
The Mathew Street Fringe Festival for original bands is now in its 3rd year. The Fringe runs from Friday to Monday in venues across the city offering a vast array of music. Working alongside the city’s venues and cultural partners, this element has Liverpool’s hottest bands playing in the city’s hippest venues.
The Fringe Festival gives you the bands that people are whispering about, breaking boundaries, running in over 30 venues across town. Bands come as far as Australia, Chile, Russia and Indonesia to be a part of this exciting element. For more information on the fringe visit www.mathewstreetfringe.com
